otoplasty
Do you or your child’s ears stick out or are they overly large?
Ear surgery (otoplasty) is a procedure to reposition ears closer to
the head or to reduce the size of the ears. Otoplasty is usually performed
when children are at least four years old which is typically the age
ears stop growing. Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and there
are generally no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an
older patient.
One method for otoplasty involves the surgeon making a small incision
in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. The doctor will
then re-shape the cartilage and bend it back toward the head.
Another technique involves a similar incision in the back of the ear.
Skin is than removed and stitches are used to sculpt the cartilage
back on itself to reshape the ear without removing cartilage.
After the surgery, the head will be covered with a bandage to help
with the healing process. Within a few days, a lighter head dressing
similar to a headband will replace the bandages.
Follow your surgeon's advice on when to begin normal activities. You
can reduce any post-operation risk of complication by closely following
your surgeon’s instructions. The information
